Why Does My Internet Keep Disconnecting?

There are several reasons this can happen and a few things you can do to remedy the situation even if you're not tech-savvy.

Bad Cables or Connections

One of the most common and easy to check Internet connection problems is having loose, bad, or poorly connected cables. You can unplug each of your cables from the wall, modem, router, and computer, or wherever they're connected. Unplug one cable at a time, and gently but firmly replace it in the same place you removed it from. Once you've checked all the cables and plugged everything back in, you can check to see if your connection has improved. If not, you can move on to the next troubleshooting tip.

Modem Needs to Be Reset

Often, your Internet is disconnecting repeatedly because the modem is having trouble communicating with your device. This can happen if there was a power outage or a power surge, among other reasons. To resolve this issue, all you have to do is reset your modem. First, power down your computer and anything else you have connected to the Internet, and then turn off and unplug the modem. When you restart it, the machine takes a few minutes to reestablish a connection. When it's ready, check your connection to determine if it's stable.

Poor Signal Strength

For devices that connect wirelessly (like smartphones, tablets and most laptops), another common issue related to an Internet connection that keeps disconnecting and reconnecting is poor signal strength from the WiFi source. This can be caused by interference in your signal from other devices in your home or simply because you're too far from the signal. The best way to eliminate poor signal strength as the source of your issue is to take an internet speed test while connected to WiFi and then connect directly to your router (if possible) and re-test. If you see a significant increase, it’s likely your WiFi signal needs to be improved and, with it, your connection issues will improve.

Bandwidth Issues

Once you’ve eliminated issues like wiring and signal interference, it’s worth considering that, if you have several devices in your home all trying to connect to the Internet at once, it can cause the signal to slow down or even kick you off entirely. The best way to correct this is to upgrade and increase your Internet speed, to do so please Contact Us. We, of course, highly recommend Breezeline’s Internet service as a great way to get the speed your usage warrants, which we can help you determine.
